Severe Weather

Severe Weather Policy

Severe Thunderstorm Warning – If this event occurs within 30 minutes of a game…that game will be canceled for the day/evening.  Any other scheduled game(s) may take place if the weather threat no longer exists and field conditions are deemed playable.

Tornado Watch/Warning – If a Tornado Watch or Warning is issued during the times that games are scheduled then all scheduled games for that watch/warning period shall be canceled.  If games are scheduled for that same day/evening and are outside the watch/warning times then those games may be played as long as weather conditions and field conditions permit.  A Startown Optimist official will make this determination.

Rain Outs - Rain outs will be decided by the Startown Director of Operations or another on-site Startown Official.  Rain outs for weekday games will be decided by 5pm.  At that time, coaches will be notified and the information passed along to parents.  Rain outs will be determined by inclement weather in the area and field conditions.

If rain occurs during a game with no threat of severe weather then it is up to the umpiring crew whether or not to call the game.  The decision will be based on player safety and field condition priorities.

If a game is called for weather, the game may rescheduled on the next available date. No Manager or Coach may cancel or reschedule a game without approval from the Startown Director of Operations.

Lightning Delay - In the event that lightning is seen or thunder is heard, or if it is determined that lightning is within 10 miles of Big Red Park play shall be suspended immediately on all fields (no finishing of a batter or inning).

When a lightning delay is called, all players must clear the field and take shelter in their vehicle with their parent(s) or Coach if parents are not present.  Spectators should go to their cars and wait for the all clear.  Players should not leave the ball park.  Players may NOT stay in the dugouts.

Play will be suspended until 20 minutes has passed without any lightning/thunder or until it is determined that lightning is outside the 10 mile perimeter of Big Red Park.

Suspension of play will be denoted by 1 long blast of the air horn.

The all clear will be denoted by 2 long blasts of the air horn.

Startown Optimist has an on-site state of the art lightning detector that will be used to determine the proximity of lightning to Big Red Park.

The National Weather Service reports that lightning can strike 10 miles from a thunderstorm and it is imperative that we not take chances in this area. The safety of our players, parents, coaches, and spectators is our top priority and adherence to this policy is a component of this priority.

Thank You for Your Cooperation
